To the Editor:
Thanks to you, we are half way there! The generosity of the people of the Merrimack Valley and beyond has brought Opportunity Works nearer to providing our premier programs and services to many more of our adult friends and neighbors living with disabilities. Thanks to you, a state-of-the-art campus is emerging behind and abutting Northern Essex Community College in Haverhill. We are a little over half way to our goal of raising $2 million toward the project.
Now we really need you all, in whatever way you can, to help us finish the job and fulfill our promise to empower people and change lives. The individuals we serve and their families rely on Opportunity Works for enrichment, fulfillment and greater participation in our communities. In turn, Opportunity Works relies on you to help us increase and improve our well-recognized, creative programming.
We are excited to be opening this new facility which we believe will be a jewel among our region’s many assets. With over 40 years of experience in developing some of the finest family members, workers and citizens in the Commonwealth, you can count on Opportunity Works to continue enhancing our communities.
We hope we can count on you to help us! Please let your heart be your guide to giving as generously as possible to this exciting project this holiday season. OPPORTUNITY WORKS CONDUCTS SAFETY AWARENESS DAY AT HAVERHILL CAMPUS
“Local public safety agencies instruct participants on life safety skills”
HAVERHILL – Opportunity Works, a private, not-for-profit organization that empowers adults with disabilities and their families, held its first annual Safety Awareness Day last week on their current campus on Summer Street. The agency will be moving into a state-of-the-art, 37,000 sq. ft. facility behind and abutting Northern Essex Community College late this fall.
Officer Paul Malone, the Deputy Director of Emergency Management of the Haverhill Police Department coordinated the event with Opportunity Works managers and staff to create a day of instruction, demonstrations, fun activities and a cookout lunch for all involved. Officer Malone was joined by Lt. Inspector Roger Moses and Insp. Steven Trocki of the Haverhill Fire Department, Andrew Robertson of Trinity, EMS, the city’s ambulance service, and Sgt. Scott Souza and his work-dog partner, “Ace” from the Essex County Sheriff’s Department along with Sgt. Jenna Walsh and her partner, “Trouble”.
Each public safety agency made a classroom presentation and then demonstrated the equipment and other assets they brought to the event outside of the building. Lee Barrowclough, Melissa Merrow, Lindsey Harris and Erika Davis headed up the safety day committee for Opportunity Works. This first of its kind event was designed to instruct program participants on life safety skills as well as to foster greater understanding in the relationship between adults with disabilities and public safety personnel. Individuals from both the Haverhill and Newburyport Opportunity Works campuses participated in the fun and educationally significant day.
Merrow, the Director of Specialized Day Services said, “The day was fun, interactive and informative and the individuals had a blast!” Program participant Tricia Borucki agreed. “I had fun and I liked the ambulance”, she said. Matt Jackson and Richard Cosman enjoyed the law enforcement and fire prevention demonstrations. “I liked the fire house. I learned about fires”, Jackson noted. Cosman added that “It was fun and I enjoyed the police.”
Barrowclough and Harris, who coordinated the event for Opportunity Works were pleased with the event’s success. “Nice weather, great demonstrations and fun was had by all”, said Barrowclough. Harris summed it up by saying, “Awesome day altogether. We couldn’t have asked for a better day!”

To the Editor:
A rocking and rolling group of 250 people celebrated the 40th anniversary of Opportunity Works recently, enjoying the music of New England’s signature Beatles cover band, “Beatlejuice”, at Bradford Country Club. Opportunity Works is marking 40 years of premier programs and services to our adult friends and neighbors who live with various disabilities.
Proceeds from the concert benefitted the Opportunity Works in Haverhill Capital Campaign that is funding the construction of a 37,000 sq. ft. state-of-the-art campus behind and abutting Northern Essex Community College.
We are so very grateful to our hosts, Kevin and Kristin Murphy, who were a delight to work with in planning the event and made Bradford Country Club feel like our home. The tented hall was beautiful and spacious and the staff were friendly and accommodating. We were especially honored that two of Haverhill’s legendary good citizens, Ted and Mary Murphy, also joined us for the celebration.
Opportunity Works thanks the Eagle-Tribune, the Daily News, WNBP 1450 AM and 106.1 FM (“The Legends”) and HC Media’s “Haverhill Journal” for their generous promotion of the event. We also thank Norwegian Cruise Lines for donating a 7-day Atlantic Cruise which was raffled as part of the concert festivities.
We once again applaud the super talented members of “Beatlejuice” for an outstanding night of music, dancing and revelry. A great time was had by all! Most of all, we are grateful to everyone who came out to be entertained or contributed in some way to the success of the evening.
We can all improve our quality of life and build better communities in our region by contributing to the building of this new facility that will serve and support our participants and their families. We hope to see you next at our Old Fashioned Campaign Cocktail Party at DiBurro’s on Thursday, June 19 from 5:30 – 7:30 pm.
For details on that event or to find out how else you can help our building project, please visit www.opportunityworksinhaverhill.org.
To all of you, thank you!
